I figured that I would explain the concepts and logic behind the file-sharing program called DC++ which is used on many college campuses at the present time due to filters that have been enforced by college authorities. Unlike Lime wire, Kazaa, Bear share, or even Torrenting for that matter, DC++ runs on separate closed end servers that one can access for file sharing. Think of it as choosing a door to go into to see a room with stuff you can use, instead of going into a huge convention center with stuff littered all over the place that you can get. The reason why many college students chose to use DC++ is because of that point exactly. You are able to share on a closed end system that only the students have access to. Also a heads up, DC++ does not work on Mac! Sorry Mac users. Don’t worry though you’ll get some treats later on. Also, out of most forms of file-sharing, DC++ is completely legal. But of course there are people out there who upload pirated items… But hey what can ya do?

A run through on setting it up:
(for those who are interested)
1. Download the most recent STABLE version of DC++ here. Also make sure you install the “Installer”, as ironic as that sounds
When you click the download installer link you will be brought to a sourceforge.net transfer location, just click “Save” and try to save it to your desktop for convenience
2. Follow the installers instructions. It will ask you to check that you accept the terms, check

or uncheck the box if you want start menu shortcuts, and choose a directory to install too. In my case I would just leave it as the default: “C:\Program Files\DC++\” (without quotes) 3. After its done installing feel free to launch it up! When its up you can go to File>Settings and under Personal Information you would give yourself a Nickname. For example, aiprojectxrox is a good one
And if you want give yourself a description that has something to do with what your sharing.
4. After of course doing the boring stuff you would need to set up your own share. You can do this by making a folder anywhere on your computer and tossing whatever you want into it. So don’t put your favorite photo of your friend or family member in there unless you want other people to have it.

5. Once you set up your shared folder you can go to File>Settings>Sharing and click add folder. You would then navigate to where your sharing folder is. It would then take some time to hash all the files. You should have at least 1-2GB uploaded size if possible. As you can see to the left there is a screenshot of the Shared menu with my “Sharing Folder” in my R:/ drive. Of course with 90GB shared! I am proud of that
6. Lastly, you can use any closed server that are publicly advertised or you can set it up for whatever college your in! Muahahahahah… In my case however you would use the closed end server for SUNY Stony Brook. Which is: sbushare.no-ip.info . Which would go into the section “Favorite Hubs.” I included the icon that you will be looking for on the right —>
7. Once your hash is finished after declaring your sharing folder and your hub is set up under your “Favorite Hubs” listing you can log on and start searching for anything you want!! Go crazy!
Thats it for today, if you have any comments, questions, concerns, requests, or death threats please dont be shy to leave feedback! Thanks!
