In the past, an author named George Orwell wrote a novel called 1984 which was based on that time period of course. But fantasizing about the future is the only thing that he did, harmless as it was. After the book was published in 1949, the term “Big Brother” was born due to the totalitarian functionalist society created inside the plot of his book. The society itself was constantly monitored by the government and nothing could be done to retaliate. Now if that was a prediction about 1984, how does that do justice to are present day, in 2008?

Well, believe it or not, in our age we have some major corporations that (controversially) have more power than the government does. A perfect example of this is Google. Now when you think of Google, you think “Oh hey! That’s the search engine almost everyone uses!!” Of course here is a blast from the past for ya: If you didn’t know this already, this blog is hosted by Google with Google ads and a Google search bar on the right side of the page. So yea, its WAY MORE than just a search engine.

Here is an excellent spoof of Google done by the New York Times:
Google Future Big Brother

The next few posts will be part of a series. I plan to inform you, the readers/general public all about the real power Google has, and how to use it for yourself. Google’s listings extend further than just websites. It has multiple database listings that are routed to it from public access web domains that might be hidden from the net. Doing a general search on Google will only give you access to the surface web, but if you know where and how to cast your search, your results will astound you! The following picture I found from a Google search (Irony?) that just about explains the difference between the Surface Web and the Deep Web. The boat being a search engine, the lines being search queries, and the fish being websites/databases/servers.

Deep Web Search vs Surface Web Search

My point is with the power of knowledge of queries, you will be able to do Google searches that can do a wide variety of things, some of them being VERY frightening… But with this information I hope you as my general reader body will have all the more reason to protect yourselves.

Stay tuned for my next series of posts, explaining the “How-To’s” of Google hacking!
